Allianz Park hosts the future!
Over the past three weeks Allianz Park has played host to over 350, 11-15 year old students competing for their respective Barnet Borough Schools Rugby titles.
Schools from across the Borough have congregated at Allianz Park, making full use of the opportunity to compete against rival schools and showcase their rugby talents. Through the BLAST Programme all secondary schools in Barnet have been introduced to the game, given in school coaching, teacher education and access to training and development sessions.
Each schools is at a different stage of development, with some entering their 3rd year of sustainable rugby within their schools and some only 6 months into their development, regardless, the standard of rugby observed by; parents, teachers and Saracens staff was commented on as ‘outstanding’.
All matches were played at a high intensity with a very high skill set. A member of staff from East Barnet commented ‘It is such a great opportunity for the guys, something I wish was available when I was at school!
The number one objective of the BLAST Programme is to create a sustainable structure and pathway for rugby in each school, and consequently in Barnet. A huge part of this of course is teacher training and developmental workshops, such as an official ELRA (Entry Level Refereeing Award) course being held for school staff at Allianz Park later next month.
The 2013 Barnet Borough Schools Rugby Champions are:
- Year 7 - East Barnet
- Year 8 - Ashmole Academy
- Year 9/10 - Wren Academy
The past three weeks has shown what huge strides have been made over the past three years, with the enthusiasm for and quality of rugby hugely improved. In the year ahead a sustainable league system will be put in place for the next academic year through the Barnet Partnership for School Sport (BPSS) in preparation for the 2015 World Cup in England.
The future is bright….. the future is Rugby!!
