Ashton & Itoje help Saxons to away win
Saracens duo Chris Ashton and Maro Itoje were involved in international action tonight, as England Saxons beat the Irish Wolfhounds 9-18 away in Cork at Irish Independent Park.
Chris Ashton completed 80 minutes on the right wing with a composed performance in both attack and defence that underlined his undoubted international pedigree.
Ashton’s Saracens teammate Maro Itoje was thrust into action a little earlier than planned, when the 20-year old lock forward came off the bench as he replaced James Gaskell after just 15 minutes of play.
The 2014 Junior World Championship winning skipper was in fine form during his 65 minutes on the field. He was a constant menace for the Wolfhounds attack, with a series of suffocating tackles and clever work at the breakdown.
The game itself was no classic, with the Welsh referee Neil Hennessy's insistence on blowing his whistle at any opportunity unfortunately curtailing any chance of flowing game. Try scorers on the night for the Saxons were fly-half Henry Slade (who also kicked eight points), and replacement winger Christian Wade.
