Billy Vunipola is getting himself acquainted with his new surroundings at Saracens, and the giant English international No.8 revealed that he is looking forward to linking up with his brother Mako this season.
“If I get the chance I’d like to play with my brother – that’s one of the main reasons that I came to the club was to team up with Mako, but I’m looking forward to testing myself and improving myself here at Saracens” explained the 20 year-old.
“It’s going to be challenge to get in the team, as there’s some fantastic talent across the squad and no more so than the back row, so I’m looking forward to getting a good preseason under my belt and I can’t wait for the season to begin”.
He added; “The first few days of training have been tough, the lads have been great and it has been fun; any thoughts of being eased into preseason have soon gone out of the window and the squad have been training well in the first few days that I’ve been at the club, it’s been impressive”.
Billy had a busy summer touring South America with England (where Vunipola secured a hat-trick of tries in a devastating six minute salvo in one match) and visiting his extended family in Tonga with his brother Mako.
“I really enjoyed the South America tour and I got to know a few of the Saracens boys that were out there” he said.
“It was great to get to know Guzzy (Paul Gustard) on tour, and begin to understand how he operates as a coach; and meeting Wiggy (Richard Wigglesworth) and Stretts (David Strettle) is important as they are two senior players at the club.
“In summer we visited the family in Tonga to see my grandmother – it was great as I also to get to spend some time with my brother after his Lions tour. Mako is enjoying himself, and rightly so, and has stayed over in Australia, but hopefully he’s not enjoying himself too much because he’ll have some tough training to face when he’s back in a few weeks” he joked.
“I’m looking forward for when he’s back – and I’m enjoying it so far as everyone has been really welcoming since I’ve arrived and it has been good.”
