Having endured a nightmare spell on the sidelines for 14 months, Jacques Burger has been handed some much needed boost, after signing a new contract to extend his stay at Saracens.
The announcement that the likable Namibian has put pen to paper on a new contract has been celebrated by all those connected with the club, and nobody seems more delighted than the inspirational back-rower.
He said: “I’m very pleased to have put pen to paper on a new contract. Obviously with the injury it can be a stressful time in your life, but even more so when your contract is running out at the end of the year. But the club have been amazing with me by offering a new deal, and I’m very happy to stay here.”
The good news for Saracens is Burger is now nearing a return to action. After 14 months out injured, Burger is now trying to regain fitness after so long out; “It’s crazy! It’s quite hard to explain. It changes so much, from week to week. For instance one week you can be doing pretty mild stuff, then the next week the intensity is so high, and I’m now at that stage in my training where I’m really putting in the hard work.”
He added: “ I’m just starting to get used to the contact drills again, the up and downs, making hits, getting in a defensive line, all rugby related training really, which is something that I haven’t done for over a year, and yeah, it’s hard-work. But you just get stuck into it.”
