Busy weekend for Saracens internationals
Saracens had seven players involved in International action on opposite sides of the globe this weekend, with games being played in Hong Kong and Montevideo, Uruguay.
Saturday afternoon, (GMT) saw the long awaited return to action of the British and Irish Lions, when they took on a Barbarians side that included Schalk Brits.
Owen Farrell and Mako Vunipola both started the game on their lions debuts whilst Saracens’ other Lion Matt Stevens came on as a replacement in the 55th minute in a match where conditions peaked at 94% humidity.
Farrell kicked 15 points on his Lions debut. Mako Vunipola was his usual all-action self in the loose throughout the game, with one of his trademark offloads nearly seeing Wales’ Justin Tupuric going close early in the second half.
Matt Stevens came on at tight-head prop to replace Adam Jones in the 55th minute, and the ex-England international scrummaged well, and was as impressive in the loose as the Lions crushed the Baa Baa’s 59-8.
Yesterday, Saracens’ David Strettle, Billy Vunipola and Richard Wigglesworth were involved in England’s 41-21 win against a South American XV in Montevideo.
It was Saracens new signing Billy Vunipola who rightly stole the headlines, with the destructive No.8 scoring three tries in a staggering six minutes during the first half.
Saracens scrum-half Wigglesworth set up England captain Tom Wood for his score in the second half whilst winger David Strettle completed 80 minutes for England on the left wing.
