Girls finish the year with a BLAST

Last week saw year 7 and 8 girls from; St James’ Catholic High School, Whitefield School, Bishop Douglass, Mill Hill County High School and Wren Academy compete for the Barnet Borough Girls Rugby title for 2013 at Allianz Park.

As part of the BLAST Programme the girls have received 5 weeks intense delivery from our award winning community coaches both during their curriculum but also with an extra curricular opportunity after school. With after school club numbers continuously above 20 this put all the participating girls in a great position to play some outstanding rugby.

The event began with a 30 minute training session ran by our community coaches followed by 5 physical fixtures for each school. Running rugby was the order of the day with some fantastic handling and support play on show resulting in plenty of team tries being scored. This standard was replicated in defence with some monstrous hits going in throughout the afternoon. After 5 rounds of fixtures, the Bishop Douglass year 7 and 8 girls team ran out winners running in 11 tries.

An outstanding afternoon of rugby was there for all to see as the BLAST Programme concludes for the 12/13 Academic year. Over 15 school staff are now qualified rugby referees and 550 pupils, both boys and girls alike introduced to Rugby. Our sport continues to grow and develop at a rapid pace in North London!
