'Magic' Mike wows Allianz Park

Mike Ellery's stunning solo effort against Northampton Saints in Saracens' 24-20 win in Saturday's LV=Cup semi final has been described by director or rugby Mark McCall as one of the finest scored at Allianz Park.

The Saracens wing wowed onlookers in the 41st minute with a fine individual finish that ignited Saracens comeback, and speaking after the game McCall said: "That has to be one of the finest tries scored at Allianz Park. It was some finish from Mike."

McCall's opinion was shared by Saracens LV=Cup coach Joe Shaw, who praised the ever improving Ellery for his piece of individual brilliance: "He's got that magic and ability to produce moments like he did today," said Shaw, "we're very pleased with him."

Shaw added: "Mike Ellery came into the club during the summer from England 7s and he was pretty raw. You have to give a lot of credit to the lad, day-in-day-out he's putting in a lot of work to improve himself. At times he spends too much time on the training ground trying to get better and we're really excited at where he is. If you look at his games from this LV=Cup campaign, and the A League campaign, every single game he's played in he's improved and become tactical more aware."

On his wonderful second half try, Ellery said: "I got the ball and I saw that one of the Saints defenders was a bit inside his man so I just went for it. All I could hear was Stretts (David Strettle) screaming for it and all the defence followed him, so I just ended up tripping over the line. At half time we spoke that we would have the wind with us, and that we were only eight points down. We talked about sticking to our game plan, and if we kicked to their corners that would see us through. Fortunately the plan paid off and we came out winners.

Ellery added: "We're delighted and we can't wait for next weekend."
