Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall says he is “delighted” to have come away with the four points, as his Saracens side were made to work for their first victory of their European campaign away at Connacht.
“We’re just delighted to have come away with the four points today” said McCall.
“I know from experience that you have to fight for every single point in this competition so we’re just happy to come here and get the result, we know that Connacht have taken some pretty big scalps here before so we’re very grateful with the result” added McCall.
“They put us under real pressure in the last twenty minutes of the first half in particular, they got their tries and their energy from that period. We didn’t cope with that all that well, but obviously we started the game very well and scored some great tries.
“We also started the second half well and we created some chances that we just didn’t take – they defended brilliantly during that time and hung in there and had that chance at the end, so we’re just grateful to come away with the result”.
McCall added; “I though our team had a lot of energy, there was no lack of effort or urgency but we didn’t deal very well with their kicking game and most of the pressure in the cam came from that area and we weren’t as clinical in the beginning of the second half as maybe we were I the first half. The two tries we scored in the first half I thought were brilliant tries”.
Saracens’ attention now moves onto Wembley on Friday when they face Toulouse, and McCall says he is excited by the prospect at playing the four times Heineken Cup champions.
“It doesn’t get much easier for us. Toulouse at Wembley, there’s going to be a huge crowd there, almost 60,000 tickets have been sold so it’s going to be quite the occasion next Friday evening, it’s something to get really excited about”.
