McCall hails Storm win
Director of Rugby Mark McCall believes Saracens Storm’s A-League championship win proves that the club is in rude health, after they beat Worcester Cavaliers 19-27 in last night’s A-League final at Sixways.
In a side littered with Saracens Academy products, Joe Shaw’s side beat a much fancied Cavaliers outfit in a tense and at time fiery contest to clinch the A-League title.
Speaking about the Storm’s win, McCall said: “It’s great news for the club as a whole. It’s been a fantastic campaign for the side and one of the most pleasing thing for us a club is seeing so many Academy players performing so well in that side.
“Maro Itoje and Nick Tompkins, are the latest players that to have come through the Academy to go on and play in the first team. The A-League has certainly helped aid their development.
“Matt Hankin, Jared Saunders, Ben Spencer, Ben Ransom have all played such an important role in the side, plus younger lads like Hayden Thompson-Stringer and Biyi Alo - it’s great to see our Academy producing players of this quality.
“This group are now breaking into the senior set-up, just like Owen Farrell, George Kruis, Will Fraser, Jamie George and Jackson Wray did a few years ago.”
McCall also praised Skills Coach Joe Shaw plus Academy coaches Don Barrell, Rory Teague and Ian Vass, who have masterminded the Storm’s successful 2104/15 campaign.
“I think the atmosphere Joe and his team have helped cultivate in the Storm squad is a great achievement. They have been positive, played some great rugby and the team has scrapped for each other throughout the competition. A lot of that credit must go to Joe, Don, Rory and Ian for the enthusiasm they have shown throughout the A-League campaign.”
