Sarries edged in tense clash – Northampton Saints 10 Saracens 7

Saracens were narrowly beaten 10-7 in their final game of the evening in Group D, as hosts Northampton Saints edged a tight contest two tries to one.

Tom Griffiths was Sarries solitary scorer, racing away to score a first half score after some steadfast defence from the north Londoners.

There were some fine defensive plays from skipper Tom Whiteley, whose last ditch try saver on Saints flyer Ollie Sleighthome was a particular highlight of an entertaining opening half of sevens rugby. It was Saints though who would have the final say of the half, when quicksilver wing Tom Collins raced onto a grubber kick to outpace the committed Whiteley to score.

Saracens were close to doubling their tally in the beginning of the second half, enjoying the lion’s share of territory and possession, but it was Saints who would score the final and all important second try with halfback Alex Mitchell wriggling over to score.

Sarries finished second level on points with Exeter Chiefs, who they will face in tomorrow’s finals day at 16h06.
