McCall: "We got the job done"

Petrus Du Plessis was superb, and I’m not sure how he wasn’t Man of the Match, as to scrummage that way against Marcos Ayerza takes some doing. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall admitted his relief after watching his side comeback from 10-6 down to beat Northampton Saints 29-20 to book their place a date at the Madejski Stadium a Champions Cup semi-final against Wasps.

McCall admitted his in-form Saracens side weren’t at their best in a nervy game at Allianz Park but after guiding his side to a fourth successive Champions Cup semi-final the Saracens director of rugby was happy that his side ‘found a way’ to get themselves into the final four.

"It was a complex game for us and we didn't play anywhere near as well as we can,” said McCall after the game.

"But we have been in worse positions that than before on the scoreboard and we just needed to turn the game in our favour. We put ourselves under pressure but good teams find a way to win games and I am pleased with our second half display.

"This is the first game of the season where everything has been on the line so to come through it like that it pleasing.  We just needed to find a way to turn the energy of the game around. Give Northampton a lot of credit because they put us under all sorts of pressure at the breakdown.

"Good teams find a way of getting the job done. We were nowhere near our best and the last few weeks in the Premiership were almost too easy for us in a way.

"These games are different; there's a lot at stake. This was the first game of the season where it's on the line and if you lose, you're out of the competition.

"Maybe we played not to lose a bit and we were lucky to be only four points down at half-time. We know we'll have to improve a lot of things against Wasps in the semi-finals."
