Saracens and Ulster Go Head to Head

Petrus Du Plessis was superb, and I’m not sure how he wasn’t Man of the Match, as to scrummage that way against Marcos Ayerza takes some doing. I thought he was brilliant today." - See more at: http://www.saracens.com/news-article/mccall-hails-pack-performance-after-tigers-result#sthash.tZ9etc1v.dpuf

With both the Saracens and Ulster sides full of talent, it’s unsurprising that Saturday’s clash will feature a number of key match ups on the pitch. Here we preview a selection of the head to heads taking to the field this weekend.

Wyles v Trimble

Both Chris Wyles and Andrew Trimble are their Clubs leading try scorers in the competition so far and will battling it out to increase their tallies this weekend. Trimble recently made his 200th appearance for the Irish side, where as Wyles gets over closer to that landmark for the men in black with Sarries win over Leicester in the New Year marking his 189th appearance.

Farrell v Jackson

Hailed as a hero after slotting the match winning penalty for Ulster from the half way line against Oyonnax last week, 24-year old Paddy Jackson is fast establishing himself as an Ulster favourite and a contender for a place in the Ireland squad alongside Jonny Sexton. Saturday will see him line up against Saracens’ Owen Farrell, also 24, who has been on impressive form this season and who is always looking to be one step ahead as he plays his part in Saracens’ wider success. Both men are the leading point scorers for their sides in the European Cup with Farrell totalling 46 to Jackson’s 39.

Itoje v Van der Merwe

Breakthrough player Maro Itoje has been a star of the Saracens side since becoming a first team regular last March with his eye catching form leading to his inclusion in Eddie Jones’ squad for the Six Nations opener in February.  A physical player with a mature understanding of the game, 21-year old Itoje will face up to a lock 12 years his senior on Saturday but who has also impressed with his physicality this season. South African Franco Van der Merwe has been a key defensive for Ulster this season and is currently the top tackler for the Irish province with a total of 47 hits.
