Saracens Women name side for Premiership semi-final

Petrus Du Plessis was superb, and I’m not sure how he wasn’t Man of the Match, as to scrummage that way against Marcos Ayerza takes some doing. Saracens Women return to Allianz on Sunday as they look to secure their place in the Women’s Premiership final in a monster semi-final against Lichfield Ladies.

In a new play-off format for the season, Saracens Ladies will look to move one step closer to regaining their title when they welcome third-placed Lichfield to Allianz Park on Sunday kick off at 3.30 the winner meeting either Richmond or Worcester at the Twickenham Stoop a week later.

The show-piece event will immediately follow the Harlequins vs Cardiff Blues Challenge Cup clash and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 5.

Saracens go into the match on the back of a impressive 68-5 demolition of Aylesford Bulls and will look to avenge their one defeat this season, a 10-20 loss away at Lichfield in November.

However, the last time the two sides met on the Allianz Park turf Saracens came out top with 24-15 victory.

Despite the tough opposition that stands in the way of Saracens regaining their Womens’ Premiership crown, captain Sonia Green is exciting at the proposition.

She said: "We go into this semi final feeling confident following a successful end to 2015, putting 12 tries past Aylesford.

“We know that this weekends match will not be easy. Lichfield will be a tough opposition with a dominate forward pack that are worthy of finishing in the top 4 this year. With this in mind we have asked a lot of the squad and we have trained over the Christmas period, working on some key areas we highlighted as weaknesses following the last game against Lichfield.

“The season so far has been an interesting one with exciting score lines along the way,” added Green. “This game will be no different. We are looking forward to the next chapter in what has already been a thrilling season and the team hopes to see as many Saracens supporters at home at Allianz Park this Sunday."

For head coach Rob Cain, the semi-final is the opportunity for his side to continue their hard work and improvement throughout the season.

He said: “We have worked hard all year on improving our performances to allow us us to compete for this semi final opportunity. Each week we have grown a little taller, seen things a bit quicker, worked a bit harder and improved with every round.

"One of our challenges is to continue this same work ethic and attitude again this weekend and the whole coaching staff have faith in all the players to continue as they left off in the regular season.”
