Saracens set new record at Wembley

Saracens created history at Wembley Stadium on Saturday when 44,832 fans watched Steve Borthwick's team record a hard-fought 19-16 victory over Northampton Saints.
In another performance that demonstrated much about the character of Brendan Venter's team, Noah Cato's try just after the interval and 14 points from the boot of Glen Jackson gave Sarries their second successive win in the Guinness Premiership.
That was the first time in five years that Sarries have won their first two games of the season and on a day of records, it was also the club's highest ever crowd and took the figure to more than 110,000 people watching Saracens first two games this season.
Off the field, the crowd were treated to performances from Diversity, winners of Britain's Got Talent, and on the field there was also no shortage of drama. Sarries led 9-3 at the break and then Cato raced the length of the field to cross the line. Saints hit back with a try from Jon Clarke almost immediately and the boot of Shane Geraghty clawed Saints back into the game.
Hearts were in Saracens mouths when Soane Tonga'uiha went over the line but knocked-on in the act of putting the ball down in the closing seconds, but Sarries held on for another win that saw them display huge amounts of character and effort.
“I told the guys in the dressing room after the match that they can’t keep doing that to me, I’m nearly 40 years old,” joked Saracens Director of Rugby Venter. “But seriously, it was a display of great character but clearly, we know that there are areas we need to improve on.
“But we have to go away and enjoy today. It was a fantastic day for everyone connected with the club. It was a huge step forward for Saracens on and off the pitch. I joined this club because I thought it could go places and have brought into the vision of the directors to take this club to the next level.
“It was an amazing experience and the atmosphere was something special – and I’m sure it won’t be the last time this season we get to play at this world class venue.”
