Injury Update - Mercey ruled out for rest of season

16 Mar 2010 - 13:45

With Saracens now having a free weekend, it is giving the medical staff a chance to work on some of the injured players ahead of the club’s next match when Newcastle Falcons visit Vicarage Road on Sunday 28th March.

It was a busy day at the office for the medical staff at Northampton Saints last weekend with a number of the squad picking up injuries.

The most serious is Tom Mercey who has torn his pectoral muscle and will be out of action for 10 weeks which will take him through until the end of the season.

However, there is better news regarding Chris Wyles. The wing went over heavily on his ankle and had to be helped from the field, but scans showed he has suffered just a sprain and he could even return for the Newcastle game, if not the following week.

Schalk Brits and Kas Lealamanua both picked up knocks in the game but should return to full training next week, however, Kameli Ratuvou has been ruled out for the next few weeks after breaking a bone in his hand – an injury he picked up just five minutes into the Northampton match. Michael Tagicakibau also missed the Saints match with a hamstring problem but he is expected to be back in action next week.

But there is good news regarding Hugh Vyvyan. His knee ligament injury was due to keep him out for at least another 3-4 weeks but the second row has worked hard on his recovery and hopes to be back in action against his former club Newcastle.

Watch Sarries TV later today for a full interview with Head Physiotherapist Andy Walker where he also gives updates on the long-term injuries suffered by Kevin Barrett, Carlos Nieto and Michael Owen.
