PREMIERSHIP Rugby and Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) have today launched a text to donate number so rugby fans across the world can contribute to the Philippines Typhoon Appeal.
From today anyone wanting to donate £5 to the appeal just has to text RUGBY to 70000*.
The situation in the Philippines is now becoming clearer and is showing the true scale of the desperation with over 13 million people affected. There are 4 million people who have been forced from their homes and around a million homes have either been damaged or destroyed.
Wayne Morris the Community and CSR Director at Premiership Rugby said: “I don’t think anyone who saw the pictures from the Philippines could fail to have been affected by what they saw and members of the rugby community are keen to help in any way they can.
“Premiership Rugby has partnered with DEC to kick off this initiative and a number of the Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs will be supporting the appeal at matches over the coming weeks.”
DEC Chief Executive Saleh Saeed said: “We have been completely overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion from the UK public, the response has been incredible. However, with 11 million people affected and 4 million people becoming displaced from their homes, the need for urgent support is vital.
“Through DEC agencies we are getting clean water, medication, sanitation and temporary shelter materials immediately to people. We must also start to look at the future as sadly we know it will take months and years to rebuild people’s lives.”
