Record breaker Ashton relishing Gardens battle
Chris Ashton scored the fastest hat-trick in Premiership history at London Welsh and immediately set his sights on the semi-final against Northampton Saints on Saturday.
Ashton’s three tries in a five minute period helped his team to a 68-17 win in Oxford to secure a top-four place and a knockout clash at Franklin's Gardens.
The England wing, who scored four of Saracens’ 10 tries against London Welsh, returns to his former club and admitted he and the team are looking forward to the clash.
He said: “We were a bit disappointed that we go ourselves into the situation where we needed to score lots of points on Saturday, but that was the reality and we had to get our heads around doing the job at London Welsh.
“They have made it tough for teams in the first half this season and they did just that. They put us under pressure and scored a couple of tries and we had to stay as calm as we could.
“We weren’t aware of the other scores throughout the game and that’s probably best otherwise you can get distracted.
“We’ve led from the front in the league in the past few years so the shoe is on the other foot going to Northampton who have finished top. It’s a great place to go and the players are excited about the game.
“We would have liked to have finished top or second, but it didn’t go that way and that shows the strength of the league. But we will go to Northampton looking to enjoy the occasion.”
