Saracens set for LV=Cup semi final clash

Saracens travel to Northampton Saints on Sunday in the semi-final of the LV=Cup and Director of Rugby Brendan Venter has called on his team to rediscover the fighting spirit that served them so well in the first half of the season.

“We haven’t been good enough and haven’t shown the fight that we had in the first half of the season and we need to get that back,” said Venter ahead of the match.

“We’ve really played ourselves into the position as underdogs on Sunday with our form in the past few weeks but that’s a position that we don’t mind being in.”

In team news ahead of the game, Wikus van Heerden misses the game with a shoulder injury so Ernst Joubert captains the side. Kas Lealamanua returns to the front row with Andy Saull also returning to the starting line-up.

“Northampton are a good side and a very well rounded team,” added Venter. “They like to run the ball up and play multi-phase rugby so we know what to expect from them. The match is a great opportunity to get to a final and to have the chance to secure Heineken Cup rugby at this stage of the season is a big carrot – just as it is to face Northampton Saints.”

Carlos Nieto, Hugh Vyvyan, Kevin Barrett and Michael Owen miss out through injury while Matias Aguero, Rhys Gill, Fabio Ongaro and Steve Borthwick are all away on international duty.

LV=Cup - the final four

It’s semi-final time in the LV=Cup on Sunday with Saracens facing Northampton Saints and Cardiff Blues welcoming Gloucester across the Severn Bridge with a place in the final up for grabs.

With the first trophy of the season to be decided and a Heineken Cup qualification place up for grabs for English teams, it adds extra incentive to the weekend’s games.

LV=Cup Semi Final Previews

Cardiff Blues v Gloucester Rugby
Sunday 14th March at Cardiff City Stadium, 12.15pm
Referee: George Clancy (IRFU)

Cardiff Blues lie in 8th spot in the Magners League table and lost their five game winning run in all competitions on Sunday with their 20-29 home reversal to Leinster.

The reigning Cup holders Blues’ only defeat in the LV= Cup this season was 11-12 at home to London Irish in round two. The Blues have won ten of their last eleven home games against English teams in all tournaments.

Gloucester are in 7th place in the Guinness Premiership and have lost their two most recent away fixtures: 11-33 at Leicester and 19-24 at Wasps. Gloucester began this season’s LV= Cup with a pair of defeats but followed this up with back to back wins against Worcester and Harlequins.

This is a repeat of last year’s final at Twickenham when the Blues won 50-12. The two teams have already met in the LV= Cup this season with the Blues winning a thriller 26-25 in the opening round at Kingsholm thanks to a 79th minute Ceri Sweeney penalty goal. Cardiff Blues have won on the last four occasions that the two teams have met.

Northampton Saints v Saracens
Sunday 14 March at Franklin’s Gardens, 16.15pm
Referee: Romain Poite (FFR)

Northampton Saints are in 2nd position in the Guinness Premiership, having lost just one of their last six matches in all competitions. The Saints have a formidable record at Franklin’s Gardens with a run of 18 straight victories since Newcastle won there 19-13 on 28 February 2009.

Northampton remain the only side with a 100% winning record in this season’s LV= Cup as they aim to go one step further than last year when they were eliminated at this stage by Cardiff Blues.

Saracens are hot on the heels of the Saints just one place behind the East Midlanders in the Premiership table. Sarries have however slipped to three straight defeats and have not won on the road since their visit to Leeds in the LV= Cup on 29 January.

The two teams have already met twice this season with Saracens victorious 19-16 at Wembley Stadium in the Guinness Premiership on 12 September and Northampton triumphing 19-3 at Franklin’s Gardens in the LV= Cup on 14 November. Sarries have not won at Franklin’s Gardens since a 35-13 scoreline in the Premiership on 18 November 2006.

Saracens miss out against Leeds Carnegie

Saracens were beaten 19-12 by Leeds Carnegie at Headingley Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a result that lifted the home side off the bottom of the Guinness Premiership table.

Sarries had controlled the first half to lead 9-3 at the break and were unable to take advantage of the field position they enjoyed and paid the price after the interval as a try from Lee Blackett secured the win for the home side.

Sarries took the lead after just seven minutes when, after going through the phases, the visitors forced a penalty and Hougaard didn’t waste the chance. It was 6-0 midway through the half as, once again, Sarries set up good possession on the 22 metre line and Hougaard dropped back in the pocket to drop a goal.

The fly half was on target once again on the half hour. Again, Sarries were camped on the Leeds 22 but with the home side having reset their defence after an initial break from Ratuvou, Sarries decided to take the points and Hougaard struck another drop.

Having lost Ceiron Thomas midway through the half after he was on the end of a powerful charge from Ratuvou, replacement fly half Joe Ford reduced the arrears with the final action of the half – making amends for two earlier misses.

For Sarries, they had shown much of the attacking play in the opening 40 minutes. Alex Goode’s clever side-step took him from his own 22 and Sarries to within five metres of the Leeds line with both Ratuvou and Brad Barritt making the hard yards for the visiting side.

Ford was on target again just minutes after the restart with the Sarries scrum penalised for popping up. But within minutes, Hougaard had restored the six point advantage after great work by Barritt at the breakdown won a penalty in front of the posts.

But the home side, buoyed by the result announced over the tannoy that relegation rivals Sale Sharks had lost against Northampton, pushed forward to score a try that owed much to their ability to keep the ball alive. Three times they offloaded in the move that ended with Lee Blackett taking the ball at pace over the line. Ford converted.

Sarries cause was not helped when both Schalk Brits and Andy Titterell found themselves sent to the sin bin for fighting midway through the half but just as the pair were about to come back on the field, Ford struck a long range drop goal to extend the lead to seven points.

As the clock wore down, it was Leeds who were in possession deep in Sarries territory and a series of scrums for the home side allowed them to run down the clock and secure the win that lifted them from the bottom of the Guinness Premiership table.

Saracens line-up: Goode, Penney (Tagicakibau 54), Ratuvou (Powell 76), Barritt, Wyles, Hougaard, De Kock (Marshall 63), Aguero Gill 50), Brits (Reynecke 76), Skuse (Mercey 74), Smith, Ryder (Botha 50), Van Heerden, Burger, Melck (Joubert 50).

Saracens travel to Leeds Carnegie on Sunday and have made six changes to the starting line-up for the Guinness Premiership round 17 clash.

In the forwards, prop Matias Aguero returns from international duty and he packs down alongside Schalk Brits who starts at hooker. Tom Ryder gets the nod in the second row while Jacques Burger and Justin Melck both come into the back row on rotation.

In the backline, Rodd Penney comes in at wing in the only change. On the bench, Fabio Ongaro is available after international duty along with Rhys Gill.

Saracens Director of Rugby Brendan Venter said: “The Guinness Premiership is a very close competition and Leeds have proved just that with their results in recent weeks. They go into the game on the back of a very good performance against Wasps last weekend and that has made things even tighter at the foot of the table.

“From our perspective, I couldn’t fault the effort and commitment from the players last week and I know they will give just as much on Sunday after a week in which they have trained exceptionally hard.”

The Saracens Academy contingent representing England U20 and U18 have been joined in their efforts by hooker Max Crumpton and centre Alex Smith who have just been named in the England U16 and U16A squads respectively.

Crumpton (pictured), from Essex, and Smith, from Kent have both been selected after the Divisional selection process was completed last month, and are now looking forward to a series of warm games, starting on Sunday prior to the U16 Internationals at Easter.

The U16 squad will play a Combined Academies U17 squad, which features Saracens players Tom Jubb, Scott Spurling and Matt Hankin at Cokethorpe School, whilst the England U16A will play against Northampton Saints at Rugby School.
This is fantastic achievement for both players, and adds to the strong representation of Saracens Academy players throughout the England age groups, including Nick Auterac and Ben Ransom who have been named in the England U18 squad to play Italy on Sunday.

Seconds out...Guinness Premiership Round 17

It’s a Six Nations rest week so all the attention turns back to the Guinness Premiership this weekend.

Leeds Carnegie’s victory against Wasps last weekend and Sale Sharks run of poor form sees the two teams level on points at the foot of the table with the Manchester side just ahead on try count. Worcester Warriors are just one point ahead so the action really is hotting up at the foot of the table.

At the top of the pile, Leicester Tigers lead by just a single point from Northampton Saints while Saracens are four points off the top spot but with a game in hand.

Guinness Premiership Round 17 Previews

Saturday 6 March
Harlequins v Worcester Warriors (Twickenham Stoop, 3pm)
Leicester Tigers v London Irish (Welford Road, 5.35pm)
Sunday 7 March
Sale Sharks v Northampton Saints (Edgeley Park, 2.30pm)
Leeds Carnegie v Saracens (Headingley Carnegie, 3pm)
London Wasps v Gloucester Rugby (Adams Park, 3pm)
Newcastle Falcons v Bath Rugby (Kingston Park, 3pm)

Harlequins v Worcester Warriors

Harlequins only victory in their last five matches in the Guinness Premiership was 13-6 over Northampton at the Twickenham Stoop on 20 February. Quins are attempting to win back to back home games in the Premiership for the first time this season! Worcester Warriors’ ten match winless streak ended with their 13-0 victory over Newcastle at Sixways on Friday. The Warriors have won just once on the road in the Guinness Premiership since November 2008: 13-6 at Gloucester on 21 April 2009. Harlequins have won the last seven encounters between the two teams in the Guinness Premiership since Worcester won 15-9 at the Stoop on 19 February 2005.

Leicester Tigers v London Irish

Leicester Tigers’ 29 game run during which they have picked up at least one league point from every match came to an end at Northampton on Saturday. The only visiting side to come away from Welford Road with a league point in the Guinness Premiership this season was Worcester in their 14-19 loss on 3 October. London Irish’s seven game winless run in all competitions ended on Sunday with their 29-14 eclipsing of Harlequins at Madejski Stadium. The Exiles are the second best away team in the Guinness Premiership having picked up 19 league points on their travels this season. London Irish won 18-12 when the two clubs met at Madejski Stadium in round 6, and are seeking a second Premiership double over the current champions having won home and away in season 2002/03.

Sale Sharks v Northampton Saints

Sale Sharks have lost their last seven matches in all competitions – their poorest run since season 1999/2000. The Sharks have gained just one league point from their last three outings in the Guinness Premiership, from their 16-22 defeat at Wasps on 14 February. Northampton Saints’ only defeat in their last eight matches in the Guinness Premiership was 6-13 at Harlequins on 20 February. The teams have already met twice this season with Northampton winning both times: 21-16 at Franklin’s Gardens in the Guinness Premiership and 20-14 in the LV= Cup at Edgeley Park. The Saints have not achieved a Premiership double over the Sharks since season 1999/2000.

Leeds Carnegie v Saracens

Leeds Carnegie seem to have really turned a corner and are in fact in fifth best in the Premiership on current form, having gained 15 points from their last six matches. Leeds have won their last two games in the Guinness Premiership and have not won three in a row in the competition since season 2004/05. Saracens only win in their last five games in the Guinness Premiership was 25-20 against Worcester at Wembley Stadium on 13 February. Sarries have not won away from home in the Premiership since they visited Bath on 31 October. Saracens have won their last eight games against Leeds in all competitions since Leeds were victorious 29-23 at Vicarage Road on 26 September 2004.

Wasps v Gloucester

Wasps’ three game winning run in all competitions ended on Sunday at Headingley Carnegie where Leeds won 26-10. Wasps have won three of their last four games at Adams Park in the Guinness Premiership. Gloucester Rugby have lost only one of their last eight encounters in all competitions: 11-33 at Leicester in the Guinness Premiership on 20 February. Gloucester’s only away win in their last 13 matches in the Premiership was 26-10 at Leeds on 4 October. Wasps have won their last three matches with Gloucester and have already beaten them at Adams Park this season: 21-14 in the LV= Cup on 15 November. Glos have won just once in 11 previous visits to Adams Park: 25-17 in the Guinness Premiership on 4 May 2008.

Newcastle Falcons v Bath Rugby

Newcastle Falcons’ only win in their last seven games in the Guinness Premiership was 12-6 at London Wasps on 3 January. The Falcons have not won at home in the Premiership since a 14-3 victory over Worcester on 1 November. Bath Rugby are the best team in the Guinness Premiership on current form having picked up 22 of a possible 25 league points from their last five games. Bath have won their last two away games at London Irish and Saracens. The Falcons beat Bath 27-16 when the two met in the Guinness Premiership at The Rec in round 6, and have only once before achieved a Premiership double over Bath: way back in 1997/98.
