Sanderson pleased with Saracens response
Alex Sanderson has hailed Saracens set-piece improvement in recent weeks, after back-to-back victories against Sale Sharks.
The Saracens forwards coach praised Saracens midweek work on their scrum after an impressive scrummaging performance against the North West outfit.
“We’ve had one or two tough weeks, where we’ve been on the receiving end of four or five scrum penalties on opposition ball,” said Sanderson, “so we’ve worked really hard in recent weeks”.
“We’ve done a lot of live scrummaging on the paddock during the week, and it paid dividends on Saturday. We got ourselves out of a few difficult situations, and not just that, we won a couple of penalties on opposition ball. In these big games, where everything’s a bit tighter and you are in these pressure situations, you take any advantage you can. It’s a good base for us that we can take into London Welsh at the weekend."
Saracens have welcomed back the returning Mako Vunipola and Petrus du Plessis in recent weeks, and Sanderson has been pleased with the front row duo’s impact.
“It’s an eight man effort, but there’s been some really impressive individual performances in amongst that,” he said. “Mako has been unbelievable. To only be in his second start of the season and be that dominant, considering the time he’s had off the field, really is something. Petrus has never let us down, in all the years he’s been here he’s always performed. We’re a bit short of tighthead’s with a few injuries to Juan (Figallo) and Kieran (Longbottom), so it’s been a time for the other guys to have the opportunity to stand up and be counted, and they did that on Saturday”.
