Saracens coaches return from Timisoara

Saracens Academy coach Rory Teague and club nutritionist George Morgan have spent a week in Romania with Timisoara Saracens.

One of the most important features of the Saracens Global Network is the coaching exchange and knowledge sharing that occurs between Saracens and its global partner clubs.

Nutirionist George Morgan hosted several sessions with the Timisoara players to try and help broaden their knowledge of a rugby player's diet. Morgan was pleasantly surprised with the dedication on show.

"The players are in really good shape and take their diet seriously. I mainly spoke to the boys about their morning routine and about the vital importance of getting enough protein at breakfast, which was something that a few of players had slightly neglected.

"But all in all, Timisoara Saracens are doing a fantastic job with the resources they've got. The players seem comfortable and at ease," said Morgan.

Saracens Academy coach Rory Teague was making his second trip to Timisoara, after he travelled with the Saracens Storm for their friendly with the Romanian partner club. This time Teague would be working with the players to try and improve their skills and bring some of his coaching expertise from the St. Alban's training ground.

The local press jumped on the opportunity to get Teague's thoughts on the city's beloved rugby club.

“It's a great opportunity for me and George to witness the training sessions of another professional team of the Saracens Global Network. My first impression was definitely a good one.

"The professionalism showed by the players and coaches was quite inspiring to be honest. They're clearly working with fewer resources than we have, but the work they put in and the way they help the players is really astonishing.

"This is not a situation in which a nutritionist and a skills coach come from England to teach Timisoara Saracens. It is more about a different point of view, a different approach that we can bring here.

"I’ve personally learned that you don’t necessarily need have to have the best conditions in order to do your job well. It's clear that everyone is pleased to be here.” explained Rory Teague.

"I've worked on a number of things in the coaching sessions: skills with and without the ball, offloads and decision making. The team responded very well and there is a lot of talent here.

Rory Teague was asked how the skill level compares to the Aviva Premiership and if one day the club could reach the levels shown by the top clubs in England.

“Anything is possible in rugby if you push your limits. There are certainly a few great players here. If we look at Catalin Fercu, he linked up with Saracens in the summer and has played in a few important matches and hasn't looked out of place. Valentin Poparlan also came in for the match against the Blue Bulls and was brilliant.

“Timisoara Saracens are a strong team, which we saw first hand when they beat the Saracens Storm last year. I'm sure they will go from strength to strength in the future,” concluded Rory Teague.
