Saracens rally to support partner club in Romania

RCM Timisoara Saracens were controversially defeated in the Romanian Super Liga semi-final on Saturday, after six of their leading players were prevented from taking the field.

Players in Romania are obliged to produce specific documents before every league game, but the medical visas of these six players mysteriously disappeared after they were presented to the referee.

Underdogs Farul Constanta won the match 9-0, advancing to play Baia Mare in the final on Saturday, while Timisoara, champions in the past two seasons, are now left to contest the third/fourth play-off.

Edward Griffiths, Saracens CEO, said: “We are concerned, and we have already discussed the apparent injustice with the Romanian Rugby Federation. Our partnership with Timisoara Saracens is designed to benefit not just the club but all rugby in Romania. Such incidents need to be avoided.”

Senior Saracens officials will travel to Bucharest on Saturday, to meet with both RCM Timisoara Saracens and the Romanian Rugby Federation, and to attend the third/fourth play-off and the final.
