Saracens Sport foundation up for award

Saracens Sport Foundation has been recognised for their fantastic and inspiring work in the local community and have been shortlisted for the Lloyds TSB Community Fund Award, where we could receive a grant of up to £3,000. This award would make a huge different to us, our community and the continuing work we do within our community but we are up against some tough competition, so please vote for us!

The Saracens Sport Foundation’s mission is to inspire communities and change lives through the power of sport.

Supported by the Saracens brand, professional players and high quality staff, we are able to provide opportunities for children, young people and older adults to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

Twelve years ago our mission was quite simple, to inspire communities and change lives through the power of sport. Whilst this has not changed, socially and economically the backdrop to our work has, making our contributions to the communities we operate in more valuable than ever.

As part of our ongoing development and to better understand the needs of our community we have focused our efforts under six key programme areas. Rugby roots; Get Onside; Saracens Sport for All; Eat Well, Live Well; Schools of Cheer and Active for Life. Whilst sport and activity are the hook to engage participants, our programmes have a broader focus to increase life chances.

Each programme is uniquely designed to meet the participants needs and address a key social agenda, these are: increasing participation at the grass roots level; education and employability for marginalised and disadvantaged young people; inclusion of disability participants in sport; healthy lifestyles for young people; dance activity targeting teenage girls; and activity for older adults.

In particular, Saracens Sport Foundation is committed to inclusive sport practice and integrating those with a recognised disability into existing sports provision. With our arrival at Allianz Park, we have greatly increased provision and currently offer the stadium each and every Monday specifically for disability sport. This encompasses a number of opportunities with Special Education Needs schools and groups making use of the opportunities on hand, taking part in tailored sports sessions and making use of out fantastic facilities.

Sarrie’s Skills Club

Sarrie’s Skills Club is our extremely successful out of school sports club for young people with autism. This is the first programme designed specifically for those who are severely autistic to be run by any professional sports team in the UK.

Sarrie’s Skills Club is an out of school sports club for young people with autism. The project is entirely unique due to the severity of autism that it caters for – offering physical activity in a stimulating environment for young people who have little or no verbal communication skills and require two on one support to ensure their safety and enjoyment. Included in a fantastic cohort of committed volunteers aged between 16 and 60 are those with higher functioning disabilities who are able to provide support to participants alongside high quality coaching staff.

We also offer respite for parents and carers, enabling them to significantly improve their support networks. The club runs every week and provides structured and progressive activities to improve physical and interaction skills. Sarrie the Camel is used as the figurehead of the club providing a visual cue for the participants to associate and interact with. We aim to improve the physical abilities of all participants, as well as their ability to interact with others which will hopefully lead to improved sleep, behaviour and ability to achieve
