Sarrie's Skills Club - Luke's Story

The Sarrie’s Skills Club is an out of school sports club for young people with autism. We rely heavily on volunteers who work alongside our trained staff to run this unique club. One young man Luke came to us with little experience but has found his calling.

Luke (pictured left) was unemployed and had recently left Barnet & Southgate college when he expressed an interest in specialising in disability sports coaching. Luke himself has autism but this doesn’t stop him from being the most dependable, reliable and skillful members of staff we have at the Saracens Sports Foundation. Before he joined us as an apprentice, Luke volunteered for 3 months and would travel three hours every day come and support Sarrie’s Skills Club.

Luke’ accolades from staff, parents and other volunteers are numerous and glowing but testament to his true skill is to see Luke interact and support the young people we work with. He never sees disability instead always focuses on their ability. Giselle, one of our participants’ parents had this to say about Luke one Monday “I watched from behind on Monday night at Skills Club as Kubi lovingly held the arm of his mate/volunteer Luke as and looked up at him in a way that only Kubi can…the look that says I trust you…I like you…you’re my friend. I confess tears of joy brewed up in me to see a bond that is pure and from the heart”

It is truly refreshing to see someone so young demonstrating such emotional maturity and positivity, his outlook and mindset influences everyone he works with making our remarkable club as special as it is. Luke has now found a real passion for this work and has a direction for his future career “at the end of my apprenticeship I hope to get a job working with young people with a disability either at Saracens or in a school.”
