Saracens were paid a visit by four Red Bull Soap Box race competitors from Barnet Elizabethans RUFC.
Phil Aspinall, Des McCarthy, Ade Heeson and Shaun Fabian visited Saracens training ground today with their soapbox for the upcoming Red Bull race, which takes place at London’s Alexandra Palace on the 14th July. They met Saracens front rowers Richard Barrington, Petrus Du Plessis and Jared Saunders who were impressed by the fiberglass down hill racer.
Shaun Fabian who will be driving the scrum themed vehicle thanked Saracens for donating £1000 for the race.
“First of all we would like to place on record our gratitude to Saracens for their generous donation.” said Fabian who will be driving in the race.
“There are basically sixty teams competing with all types of different soapboxes, all built by amateurs racing downhill in a time trail. We are entering the race as a Mini’s Barnet Rugby Club to promote minis and junior rugby in the north London area. There is a region of five or six thousand teams that applied and we were one of the lucky ones that were accepted.
“Part of the criteria is that the maximum weight is 80kg, there is no suspension, just wheels, steering and brakes” he explained .
“This is a little mean machine, a deceiving mean machine; it looks big, it looks heavy but actually it’s very light”.
