BLAST Girls Rugby Causes a STORM!
On Thursday afternoon the BLAST Programme hit the road and travelled to Bramley Road, home of Saracens Ladies, as we hosted the year 7 and 8 Girls Schools Rugby Festival. The BLAST Programme in partnership with the SOPRA Group, has this year engaged over 360 new to rugby female students from; The Compton School, Ashmole Academy and London Academy. These incredible numbers add on to 7 other schools who have received this curriculum based delivery from Saracens Sport Foundation coaches over the past 2 years.
Thursday saw 76 aspiring young female rugby players compete for the girls rugby title as the schools battled in a pool format before the grand final. The standard of rugby was phenomenal from start to finish considering the amount of rugby the girls had played prior to the event. The event was supported by club representatives from Saracens Amateurs Ladies and Girls set up with current female players offering coaching to students and advice as to how they begun their playing careers.
Throughout the festival the technical accuracy shown around the contact area and the clinical finishing shown by the girls was described by school staff as ‘exciting!’ After 10 grueling pool games the top side from each pool met in the final. The Compton School and Bishop Douglass locked horns in a North Finchley derby showdown!
An intense final was littered with brutal collisions and superb open field running and handling skills. The Compton School ran out winners against last years winners Bishop Douglass. The team showed a fantastic clinical edge when scoring and a physical defensive mentality against a hard running Bishop Douglass side. Miss Hughes from Bishop Douglass exclaimed “It was run brilliantly again and all the girls had a fantastic time. Hopefully there will be more events to come in the future and the game will continue to grow for the girls”
Rugby is growing at a rapid pace within North London both on the male and female fronts. For more information about the BLAST Programme please contact; email@example.com
