BLAST into 2015!

January 2015 has seen two schools join the BLAST Programme full time with both Christ’s College and Finchley Catholic jumping aboard. School staff have now attended a Rugby Ready Course as we have hit the ground running first week back in the New Year! Both schools will have rugby delivered during curriculum time and also extra-curricular as we look to leave each school in a position of maintaining sustainable rugby going into the next academic year.

4 Academic years ago there were 3 secondary schools in the local area with curriculum based rugby being delivered…. 4 years later with the work of Saracens Community coaches on the BLAST Programme we now have 19 secondary schools delivering sustainable curriculum based rugby! 28 school staff have attended an ELRA Refereeing course, 47 year 7-10 teams entered for school leagues and nearly 5,000 students have been engaged with rugby through the BLAST Programme over the past 4 years.

September 2014 was the start of our first ever league system for secondary schools on the BLAST Programme. Over the past 4 months year 9’s and 10’s have been competing for rugby top honours in North London. On Thursday 11th December, Allianz Park hosted our year 9 and 10 Final showpiece event! Our year 10 final was a North Finchley derby match as Compton School locked horns with neighbours Wren Academy. In the year 9 final St James’ Catholic High School took on Finchley Catholic. After two enthralling finals full of huge hits and fast flowing running rugby, Wren Academy took the year 10 title winning 25-15 and Finchley Catholic ran out 45-15 victors.

The year 7 and 8 BLAST League is now up and running this term with the Finals being held at Allianz Park at the beginning of May!
