BLAST – Mission Accomplished!!

The BLAST Programme is coming to a close for the 2014-15 academic year after Allianz Park played host to our Year 7 and 8 BLAST League Finals.

The event was attended by a huge number of parents showing their support for the BLAST Programmes work. Two of Saracens 1st XV squad members also came down to support the BLAST event, Nick De Jaeger and Jared Saunders. Jared exclaimed ‘The physicality of these boys is unbelievable, I didn’t expect the skill set to be so good!’

In the Year 7 competition, Finchley Catholic locked horns with Mill Hill County; a pairing which earlier on in the season saw Finchley Catholic run out 55-0 winners. The form book went out the window for this one; a showcase of skill, commitment, and physicality were visible for all to see. Finchley Catholic who have scored a staggering 41 tries this season, conceding just 2 tries, were overturned by a determined performance from Mill Hill County. After Finchley Catholic had spent the last 5 minutes running at the Mill Hill County line the underdogs battled to hold on and claim the Year 7 title, winning 25-20!

In the Year 8 final East Barnet took on Finchley Catholic; two of the most consistent teams in this year’s competition. After a dominant first half performance from Finchley Catholic, East Barnet worked their way back into the game getting themselves on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for them it was not enough as Finchley Catholic showed composure and accurate finishing to run out 40-15 victors and crowned Year 8 Champions!

Huge congratulations must go out to all of this years finalists, especially those who emerged victorious! Next year the BLAST Programme will take its tally up 24 North London schools engaged with the programme, with all having sustainable curriculum based rugby being delivered. Upskilling current school staff will remain a key priority as much as supplying the 5,200 engaged students with continued opportunities to play Rugby at school.
