Elite Coach Education Thinks Outside The BOX!

Last Wednesday evening saw the third installment of Saracens Elite Coach Education Programme.

Guest speakers for the evening were Rich Shuttleworth and Stuart Armstrong from the RFU;

Rich joined the RFU from the Australian Institute of Sport where he has worked as their Skill Acquisition Specialist. His ongoing education of coaches throughout the country is by far a thinking outside the box method and he shared his philosophy based on the 'Game Sense' or perhaps more accurately the 'Constraints Led' model of coaching. His thoughts and ideas suggest that skill should never be developed outside of a game like training environment, rather coaches should always challenge themselves and strive to create what Shuttleworth calls 'designer games' so that players are learning and developing skills while inside a game like context so that the acquired skill is learned in an integrated sense rather than isolated.

“Fantastic session last night.  Really thought provoking”.  – Mark Skelley– U9 Coach Saracens Ams

Stuart has led on the development and implementation of the England Rugby Developing Player Programme which has seen all key partners collaborating to deliver high quality player development experiences, encouraging lifelong participation in the game and enabling those with potential to be clearly identified and supported. On the evening he explored examples and provided evidence from the world of sports science and talent research to enable the coaches with passion and dedication to identify improvements that they could make to their role as a Talent Development coach.

“Wednesday nights Elite Coach Education was superb, by far the best one I have attended in many years” – Andy Clifford – Old Verulamians RFC
