The Saracens Tag Rugby Programme aims to increase the number of primary schools delivering Tag Rugby activities to their pupils. Every primary school teacher within our community is given the opportunity to attend a Saracens ‘Ready for Rugby’ teacher training session. The 2014-15 season alone has seen 171 school staff members attending teacher training sessions across Hertfordshire, Barnet, Brent, Enfield and Harrow.
The programme provides pupils from Year 4-6 with the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete against other local primary schools at a Saracens Tag Rugby Festival. We are just over halfway through our Tag Rugby Festival schedule for 2014-15 and the excitement hasn’t stopped. So far Tag Festivals have been run across 11 districts, with 9 districts still to compete.
Tuesday saw 27 teams from North Hertfordshire School’s step up to the plate at Letchworth RFC, accompanied by four Sport Apprentices who scored the pool-rounds. Despite a cruel hail storm during the last matches of the pool-rounds, the effort and enthusiasm the schools and supports gave was incredible. Thankfully, by the time the quarter finals began, the sun was shining and the atmosphere was heating up! The quarter finals were tight with only one try separating each winning team. The score’s became tighter during the semi-finals when one result had to be decided by a ‘golden try’ in extra time. The festival culminated in a tense final between Hartsfield JMI and Whitehill Junior schools. The defending of both teams was highly commendable; only three tries were scored during the final, with Hartsfield eventually emerging as the Festival champions!
A female member of the victorious Hartsfield team described the festival as “the best day ever!” Both the Hartsfield and Whitehill teams will get to put their skills to the test later in the year when they compete in the Hertfordshire Tag Rugby Finals, we wish both schools the best of luck!
Nearly 2000 children have enjoyed competing in Tag Festival’s so far this season, and we’re well on track to exceed the 4500 marker set last year. In addition to this; we are piloting Tag Rugby Leagues within three districts this season with the hope that schools will enjoy competing more regularly, and we will be able to set leagues up within more districts next year!
