The need to deliver work to prisoners is massively undervalued as currently the national re-offending rate states 70% of young offenders leaving prison will re–offend within 12 months, this is due to lack of motivation, career aspirations, support, role models and society.
The Get Onside program looks to build career aspirations, provide a mentor, link to a local sports club and to assist in finding educational routes or employment, this will in turn give them a sense of belonging and surrounds them in a positive environment. Currently the success rate of Get Onside is 92% of young offenders are not returning to crime saving the Government and tax payer around £1 million per year.
Our personal development program in Feltham Young Offenders is using rugby and the core values of Saracens as the vehicle to re-engage with these young men, our focus is on Discipline, Honesty, Humility and Work rate which are all traits they can apply post release.
The program is a ten week cycle with both educational and rugby development aspects as part of a daily routine, leadership, teamwork, behavioural management, CV writing, professional standards, ethos and ethics of rugby are some of the focus areas.
