Hargreaves hails festive win
Saracens captain Alistair Hargreaves was delighted to have left Kingston Park with a hard-fought victory, after Saracens edged a tight contest against Newcastle on Saturday to win 23-25.
The 28-year old lock forward praised his side's overall performance, after they came back from 13-10 down to win an action packed contest.
Speaking after the game on Saturday, Hargreaves said: “That was a very good Newcastle team we played today. We knew that during the game we would be up against it at times, and we were expecting that. That’s the best Newcastle team I have seen since I’ve been at Sarries.
“We played well for most of that game, unfortunately I think after we scored that third try we chased the fourth, and that side-tracked us a little. We made it a lot closer than we needed to. Overall it was a great result, a good day and great to get a win over the festive season.
“The boys played with a lot of intensity, commitment and for 70 minutes we were really good”.
Two of Saracens academy players came off the bench during the game, with Hargreaves’ fellow lock forward Maro Itoje and try scorer on the day Nick Tompkins both making appearances.
On their contribution, Hargreaves said: “It’s very rewarding for the club as a whole to see someone like Nick take his try so well, and the pair of them performed when they came on.
“We pride ourselves on giving people opportunities and letting our younger players grow. The only way you can do that is giving these guys time on the pitch".
He added: “Hopefully these guys can be players who can play for Saracens for years and years to come”.
