Herts School Games Tag Succsess

Thursday 26th June saw the 2014 Herts School Games take part at Wodson Park in Ware.

Two teams from each borough across Hertfordshire quailfied as finalists from their own Tag Festival earlier in the season, they came ready with their high scoring try rates and fantastic offlaods to battle it out in the Grand Finals of Festivals to finish the season.

With the sun beaming down all 24 teams showed the skills that had won them their status as grand finalists with some very close and well contested matches. As predicited it was hard to call who would progress from the group into the world cup style quarter final draw. However it was great to see a representastion from nearly every differnet borough make it through, Crabtree of Harpenden  victorius over Field Jnr of Watford, Harvey Road from Three Rivers just piping Chaulden of Dacorum to the win, St Helens of St Albans taking Countess anne from Wewyn in the last minute of the game and finally Bengeo from Hertford flying through their game with a 6 try to 3 win over Hertsmeres Brookmans Park.

The games in the semi finals were always going to be a battle of the first mistake win the game, Crabtree showed there prolific try scoring record with a suprising 5 - 3 victory over strong favoiutes Benego and Havery Road just missed out on the golden try ruling to St Helens! this setting up a inter borough final with the two St Albans & Harpenden partnership schools to play the last game to see who would take the 2014 crown and a bit of friendly in house pride. A seemisly tennis type game with one score after an other and very little mistakes, it was Crabtree who benefited from winning the toss at the start to have the last word with a 7-6 victory on the day.

This season has seen near record number of participation in the Tag Programme with 4,784 year 5 &6 pupils taking part. All the schools that had partaken this year have really set the bench mark for following years with the programme, and with the Rugby World Cup looming in 2015, it is a great start in continuing the ever growing game within schools in Hertfordshire.

A big thank you to new support of the programme from Mcdowall Media who have provided some great equipment for the year, and to all the volneteers who have helped run the festivals and make them successful.
