'Incredible spirit' key to A-League triumph - Shaw
A delighted Joe Shaw praised his Saracens Storm’s side “incredible spirit”, after they lifted the Aviva A-League Championship at Sixways Stadium.
Skill Coach Shaw masterminded a superb campaign for the Storm, as they finished the season unbeaten after defeating Worcester Cavaliers 19-27 in a tense final.
Speaking after Storm captain Maro Itoje lifted the A-League trophy, Shaw said: “It’s been a long time coming for a lot of guys. I think you could tell by the end of the game how much it meant to a lot of people. We’ve said from the very outset that this young and inexperienced side has an incredible spirit and that’s driven us on in some really tough places this season.
"We came up against a very experienced team, at their home ground in front of their home fans who turned up in droves and won, which is an incredible achievement.
"I think Maro (Itoje) said it best at the end, the most incredible thing about this group is the tightness and togetherness they possess. That has got us through a lot of adversity at times, no more so than tonight, where our discipline let us down from time-to-time. We still found a way to win, and to do that is fantastic.
He added: "We’ve played with such maturity at times this season, and we’ve played to our strengths very well tonight”.
