The Premiership Rugby Cup is back…
Saracens embark on a new Premiership Rugby Cup campaign this week, a competition which has become a crucial one to the group in recent years.
It kicks off on Saturday with another local derby against Harlequins and a number of players will be hoping to use the game time in similar fashion to those who have succeeded by lifting this trophy in the past.
The Men in Black won the Premiership Cup in memorable fashion in 2015, when a last-gasp penalty from Ben Spencer proved enough to beat Exeter Chiefs 23-20 at Franklin’s Gardens.
The squad that day was captained by Maro Itoje and it also included the likes of George Kruis and Richard Barrington which shows how impactful the tournament has been for their careers.
Seasoned internationals Owen Farrell, Jamie George, Alex Goode and Mako Vunipola have also appeared in this competition for Sarries in the past.
The next fortnight will provide an opportunity for the group to make a positive start against Harlequins and London Irish, and they will be led by coaches Kelly Brown and James Tirrell who will be leading the group throughout the Cup.
Tirrell, who has been at Saracens since the age of 14 is excited to see this group grasp the chance to shine.
“Seeing these boys develop into first-team players and starting for the club is massive for us. That’s what drives us each day – seeing those guys develop on their journey.”
The likes of Ben Harris, who has been in electric form for Saracens Storm will be eyeing up a start this weekend, as will Ethan Lewis who made his first Premiership appearance for the club against Harlequins a fortnight ago.
“My personal target is just to be involved in the 23 as much as possible.” Said the Welshman.
He added: “We’ve got a lot of very good hookers at this club so the competition is very intense. I’ve tried to be a sponge in this environment and I’ve already learnt a lot so hopefully I can show it on the pitch.”
There is a new-look format this year with all 13 Gallagher Premiership clubs taking part, which is played during the international windows, and they are split into three pools. Sarries will be facing Harlequins, London Irish, Northampton Saints and Wasps.
The top team in each pool, plus the best overall runner-up, will progress to the semi- finals, with the highest ranked teams having home advantage.
The winners of the semi-finals will then meet in the final in May 2022. It will be played on the home ground of the highest ranked remaining team.
