Join us to celebrate Remembrance Sunday at StoneX Stadium…
Those in attendance at the StoneX Stadium today are in for a treat with the two best attacking sides in the Gallagher Premiership going head-to-head.
Saracens have found the perfect balance between entertainment and winning this season, and currently sit at the top of the Premiership’s try scoring charts with 31 touchdowns.
But Northampton have also had fans up and down the country on the edge of their seats with an exhilarating brand of rugby. They are currently second on the try scoring list having crossed the whitewash on 29 occasions already this campaign.
Given Saints are also occupying a play-off spot this is a hugely important game in the context of the season. Mark McCall’s side will know they’ll have to be at their very best to come out on top against a Northampton side who look revitalised under new director of rugby Phil Dowson. Saints narrowly lost to eventual champions Leicester Tigers away from home in the semi-finals last season and are very much a side on the up.
They will be coming into this game on a high having beaten a strong Exeter Chiefs side 26-19 at Franklins Gardens last weekend. Due to the structure of the season both sides will be shorn of several of their front-line players but have the strength in depth to cope with the absences.
There remains a lot of quality in Northampton’s ranks with the likes of Australia international Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Tommy Freeman, Fraser Dingwall, and Rory Hutchinson. Mark McCall’s side are also brimming with quality players such as the experienced Alex Goode, Max Malins, Scotland international Sam Maitland, and Italy tighthead Marco Riccioni.
This match takes on extra significance given the fact it’s Saracens’ final Premiership fixture until December 23 where they travel to Brentford to face London Irish. It is therefore imperative that the home side come out on top today to solidify their place at the top of the Premiership table.
Sarries will be full of confidence having comfortably beaten Bristol Bears 25-10 at Ashton Gate last weekend. It was a wet weather masterclass from Saracens whose forward superiority, solid set-piece, and tactical excellence allowed them to secure four match points. The metronomic boot of Alex Goode, and a moment of magic from Max Malins was what sealed it with both Elliot Daly and former Springboks number nine Ivan van Zyl the standout performers in difficult playing conditions.
With several players absent on England duty the likes of Goode are invaluable in making sure Saracens stay on the straight and narrow during this vitally important period of the season.
As always today’s game is extremely poignant as it falls on Remembrance Sunday, and the club will be honouring all those who have lost their lives serving their country. The Last Post will be played before kick-off as a way of marking our respects as a club.
