It’s our final regular league home game of the 2021/22 season…
Saracens will be hoping to bounce back from their European Challenge Cup disappointment as they welcome Northampton Saints to the StoneX Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
Mark McCall’s side exited the Challenge cup at the semi-final stage after getting beaten by a powerful Toulon side on the Cote D’Azur last Saturday night.
While the feeling of disappointment was palpable in the south of France, Saracens have now turned their attention to the Gallagher Premiership with a home play-off semi-final at stake.
Saracens currently lie in second spot on the Premiership table, and the prospect of winning a sixth title is sure to have sharpened the mind of every single player in the squad along with the coaching team.
But first up is a difficult assignment this Saturday against arguably the form side in the Premiership with Northampton Saints having won their previous five fixtures with bonus points.
Under the tutelage of Chris Boyd, and Sam Vesty Saints have been extremely potent in attack, and Saracens’ defence will have to be watertight if they are to avoid slipping on this particular banana skin.
Saracens will be buoyed by the most recent Premiership encounter between both clubs with McCall’s men producing arguably their best performance of the season to date when they recorded a comprehensive 30-6 victory at Franklins Gardens in January.
Even though the Premiership play-offs are three weeks away this is a knockout game in everything but name for Northampton.
After a difficult start to the season, Northampton’s recent surge in form has propelled them into fourth position, but they can ill afford any slip ups given they’ve got sides of the quality of Gloucester and Exeter Chiefs breathing down their necks.
Saracens will need to find ways to deal with the physicality of England and Lions forward Courtney Lawes, while the likes of Lewis Ludlam, and Juarno Augustus will also look to give Saints some go forward.
But since New Zealander Boyd took the helm at Northampton after joining from Super Rugby outfit the Hurricanes in 2018 the club have moved away from their more traditional forward orientated game towards a more expansive brand of rugby.
Northampton are extremely dangerous with ball in hand and score a large amount of their tries off turnover ball, while in experienced Wales outside-half Dan Biggar they have a general who can control the game along with a world class goalkicker.
Scrum-half Alex Mitchell will also be a threat around the base of the ruck, while England internationals Fraser Dingwall, and George Furbank are also players Saracens will have to contain.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS
Saracens continues to treat supporter safety and its Duty of Care to anyone attending StoneX Stadium with the utmost importance.
Following the Government’s announcement to stand down Plan B protocols in relation to Covid, there is no stipulation to complete a health declaration or lateral flow test to secure stadium access. Covid 19 infection still remains a risk – Saracens cannot completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19. Therefore, if you feel uncomfortable with the risk, you should not attend a match. We would ask you NOT to attend StoneX Stadium if you have returned a positive COVID-19 test within 5 days of the fixture, or if you have any COVID symptoms – including a high temperature, new continuous cough, or a loss of sense of taste/smell.
Whilst there is no legal obligation to do so, in order to assist with the safety and wellbeing of all stadium visitors, spectators should consider using a face covering in indoor areas and congested areas around other people.
We continue to work closely with our partners at DCMS, PRL and the London Borough of Barnet to ensure that we place the safety of our supporters at the forefront of our planning for upcoming match days.
