“We wanted to build on the momentum we’ve managed to build since the defeat at Sale, and the boys have shown what they’re all about.”

Mark Mccall

Allianz Park had not hosted Gallagher Premiership action since December ahead of this afternoon’s clash against Leicester Tigers and the return of the domestic league to north London did not disappoint as Saracens came from behind to secure a bonus-point win in a tightly fought contest.

Sarries seemed to have stamped their mark on the game early in the opening half, maintaining possession and building territory from the get go; an outstanding step and break from Alex Goode a highlight in a positive opening 10 minutes for the home side.

Impressive defence from the visitors thwarted the Men in Black’s best efforts to progress to the try line though and, against the run of play, it was the Tigers who were first on the board courtesy of a Matt Toomua penalty.

Their lead however was short lived. A fine break from man-of-the-match Matt Gallagher created the opportunity, allowing Richard Wigglesworth to speed away to the line from Nick Isiekwe’s pass for the opening try. Alex Lozowski’s conversion missed the mark, leaving Saracens with a narrow 5-3 lead.

The remainder of the first 40 was closely fought with both sides showing defensive grit to prevent the other from moving too far in to their respective 22s. A wayward penalty from Matt Toomua saw the Tigers miss an opportunity to go ahead late in the half, but the visitors made no mistake when presented with their first real try scoring opportunity of the afternoon as Jonah Holmes sprinted down the wing to take back the lead on the stroke of half-time.

With little to separate the sides for much of the second half, Saracens were patient in their attempt to wear down Leicester’s resistance, and as the game wore on cracks began to appear in the visitors’ performance. Two penalties from the boot of Lozowski allowed the home side to take the lead by a single point before a fine closing period of play saw Mark McCall’s side claim control of the fixture.

The hosts scored three tries within the last 15 minutes of the game – first Tom Woolstencroft barging his way over from the back of a maul; Ben Spencer racing in for a characteristic score and then David Strettle trotted in from the wing following a superb looping pass fromthe returning Mike Rhodes to secure an imporant bonus point to send Sarries back to the top of the Gallagher Premiership.
