More than just a Sports Club
The Sarrie’s Skills Club is an out of school sports club for young people with autism. For club member Peter and his family it is more than just a sports club.
Peter is extremely noise sensitive so spaces that create loud sounds are a challenge for him, and a real obstacle for us to address. By ensuring we provide the right support for Peter we can support his all-round development as well as ensuring he improves his health. Despite him being non-verbal we know that the big high fives and huge grin he greets us with is testament to his enjoyment. Peter’s mum recognises the impact it has on her son and says “I should say that Peter's smiles and giggles on a Monday afternoon when he realises he's off to Sarries is a joy for us to experience.”
Amazingly, joining Sarrie’s Skills Club has enabled Peter to feel comfortable with Allianz Park. So much so that his parents have been able to bring him to a number of games! For someone with autism new experiences can be incredibly stressful, but Peter has taken this in his stride and is now a true Saracens fan; it’s always great to see him and his family in his Fez on game. This is something this family never thought would have been possible, so to experience the sense of belonging is hugely important for them.
The next stage of Peter’s amazing journey has seen him training alongside Foundation staff in order to take part in the London 10k run in July. This will be an incredible feat, and one which shows how the Sarrie’s Skills Club is far more than just an opportunity to take part in sport.
