Anglo Welsh Match Preview: Saracens v Leicester

This weekend sees the last round of the pool stages of the Anglo-Welsh Cup as Saracens take on Leicester Tigers at Allianz Park.

Saracens currently top their group and a win against the Tigers on Sunday would see the Men in Black see to the semi finals.

The Opposition

Despite enduring some tough times of late in the Aviva Premiership and the Champions Cup Leicester’s Anglo-Welsh form this season has been faultless. The East Midlands side are already qualified for the semi final stages and come into the game undefeated in the competition. The Tigers have conceded just 43 points so far in the competition; only Ospreys (36) and Sale Sharks (42) have conceded fewer. In attack Leicester have racked up 90 points to their name with only Saracens (93) and Exeter (129) scoring more.

Last Time Out

Saracens last faced Leicester Tigers in the Anglo-Welsh Cup back in 2012 when the Men in Black defeated the then defending champions Tigers 38-21. It was a Saracens team which featured the likes of Jamie George, Duncan Taylor and George Kruis with George and Taylor two of the try scorers on the day. Further scores came from Joe Maddock and Andy Saul while Nils Mordt added 18 points with the boot.

One to Watch

Hooker Harry Thacker was one of the stand out performers for Tigers last weekend, scoring a try as the Tigers overcame the Saints. The 22 year old enjoyed a break through season for Leicester in 15/16 and was named Players’ Young Player of the Season as well as Supporters’ Young Player of the Season that year.

We Said

“I think we’re feeling extremely excited about the opportunity that’s going to come this weekend. I think with the group that we’ve got I think we’re pretty strong, everyone’s working hard and busting their balls. We’ll have to keep within our game plan and not to change much and keep working through our 5 percentes and hopefully we’ll be good.” – Jared Saunders
