Barrington praises Saracens mentality after third preseason victory
Saracens 49-0 victory over Timisoara Saracens on Friday night put the icing on the cake of an impressive preseason.
The backs flashed in the seven try performance, with the old guard and new faces working together seamlessly to put on a show.
Nothing epitomised this more than prop Richard Barrington’s reaction.
He said: “That’s what makes us so tight, when the maybe second or third choice guys put their hands up, really give it to them, and play for the badge.”
Barrington’s words aren’t simply a phrase, and resonate poignantly in the performance of his in-game replacement, Hayden Thompson-Stringer, who scored the game’s final try.
Thompson-Stringer said: “Coming off the bench, the one thing I wanted to bring was energy.
“I’m just enjoying it more and more every week.”
The back row to prop convert has impressed the coaches throughout the preseason and is now hoping to keep it going into the Premiership season.
He said: “There’s a bit of an opportunity there, hopefully I’ve put down a bit of a marker and showed that I want it enough.”
Though it wasn’t only an impressive display of energy, poise, and character. It was a masterclass in creative attacking play, overseen by winger Sean Maitland and fullback Alex Goode.
Backs coach Kevin Sorrell said: “We made good decisions on the ball, particularly in deciding when to go wide and when to play up the middle.
“The performance in the first half was particularly good.”
The team will now look to next week’s Premiership opener against Northampton in the London Double Header feeling confident they are in good form.
Prop Vincent Koch said: “We’ve worked for a good eight weeks or so in the preseason getting our bodies ready for the premiership so I think the guys are really ready and in good shape.
“I’m massively excited for the season and what all the new guys can bring to the game.”
