Barritt praises 'steely' preseason work ahead of Bermuda hit-out
Brad Barritt has praised Saracens ‘steely focus’s during their preseason training as the north Londoners prepare for their first preseason clash of the campaign on Thursday evening against the USA Islanders in the Atlantic Cup in Bermuda.
Club captain Barritt is one of 44 players currently out in the North Atlantic Island for Saracens preseason training camp, with the squad training at America’s Cup Oracle Team USA’s training base, whilst getting to know the Island in their spare time. Barritt, who turned 31-years old earlier this week, believes the trip has provided the squad with the chance to put six weeks of preseason preparation into action.
Barritt said: “We’ve come of the back of five great weeks preparation (heading into the Bermuda training camp). We’ve slowly morphed into rugby specific training now, a lot of training to date has been condition, strength, speed work, but now we’re transitioning to more the more rugby kind of training. It’s a really exciting time of the year, that’s why you put in the hard yards and Thursday evening is the first opportunity for us to get a taste of all the hard work that we’ve been putting in."
Thursday evening will see Saracens face a USA Islanders side on the Island. It is the first time Saracens, who have visited the British Overseas Territory on two times prior to this week’s trip, have used their time on the Island for a preseason camp, with the Men in Black having visited before but for a post-season tour.
“We’ve been to Bermuda before, and we usually come here on a post-season trip, but the approach for this year’s visit is the polar opposite to those previous visits,” explained Barritt. “Usually we come over in June, when the guys have had a long season and they come over to enjoy the rugby and get amongst the beers but this trip is all about a steely focus to training, getting to know each other better and creating those lasting bonds. We’re an ambitious team who want to put in as much work as we can and we’re here to get some quality work done."
Barritt will have a watching brief later this evening, with the Sarries club captain sitting out the first preseason friendly. Leading out the side in his place will be Chris Wyles with the former USA captain running out against a few of his former National team teammates.
On Wyles’ captaincy, Barritt said: “We’ve got a quality side out on Thursday evening, spearheaded by Chris Wyles who has given so much of his career to American rugby, so it’s great that he can skipper the side in a game that’s designed to bridge the gap between in the UK and the States. He gets the lead the team out after ten years of incredible service to Saracens and I think the all the guys will be looking to put on a show to the Bermudan public.”
Saracens fans who would like to watch the game will be pleased to hear that the game is being streamed LIVE. Go to FloRugby.com, or download the FloSports app on Roku and Apple TV 4, to catch all of the action AND archived footage! – click here for more info
