'Battling' Saracens delight McCall
Director of rugby Mark McCall praised his side’s ‘battling qualities’ after Saracens defeated Sale Sharks 28-13 in round eight of the Aviva Premiership.
McCall’s side ran-in three tries to defeat the Sharks at their AJ Bell Stadium home, becoming only the second team to do so in the Aviva Premiership in 2016 and after the game the Northern Irishman paid tribute to the professional nature of his team’s performance.
“We showed a lot of battling qualities today,” said McCall after side’s seventh win of the Premiership season.
“It’s very important for us to pick up as many points as we can during this (international) period and we’re very pleased to have come away with the win today. This (AJ Bell Stadium) is a tough place to pick up points.
“It was great because a lot of our experienced players were outstanding: Schalk Brits, Schalk Burger, Brad Barritt,” said McCall. “I could name quite a few of them.
“We were really pleased to pick up the points and really pleased with a lot of aspects of the performance, in terms of the qualities we want to show every week.
“Our maul defence five metres from our line was outstanding. It’s normally a big strength of theirs but Jim Hamilton and the rest of the forwards did a great job.”
McCall also paid tribute to some of younger stars, with the impressive Alex Lozowski capturing his eye after another assured performance from the Sarries No10. The 23-year-old added 13 points with the boot, was a constant threat in attack and released Spencer for Saracens’ third and final try.
“He looked really sharp out there. He ran the ball beautifully and passed well so he’s a good player,” added McCall.
“We got a couple of long-range tries out there, but we were alive to the situation and capitalised.”
