Billy Vunipola: "It Was Good To Be Back"
Billy Vunipola has said it was ‘good to be back’ after he returned to the Saracens line-up against Wasps on Sunday.
Vunipola produced a brilliant performance as Sarries ran out 15-38 victors at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday to retain second place in the Aviva Premiership, halving Exeter’s ten-point lead at the top to five.
The Number 8 hadn’t played since September but his return alongside Maro Itoje helped spur the Men in Black on to victory, speaking after the game Vunipola said it was good to be back.
He explained: “It was good to be back, I just enjoyed being out playing again and to get the win like we did was awesome as well, It’s good to get a great win and hopefully we can carry it into the game against Ospreys.”
Against Wasps, Vunipola was removed from the action in the 72nd minute as the squad prepares to take on the challenge of facing Ospreys and Northampton in back-to-back Champions Cup games, starting with a trip to Swansea on Saturday.
The 25-year-old added: “On Sunday I was just trying to go out there and play to the best of my ability and not leave anything in the tank, I feel like I’ll be better for it next week and hopefully if I keep playing like that then I’ll be back to where I was before in no time.”
Sarries have now recorded three successive wins ahead of a crucial period in the season, starting against Ospreys on Saturday evening at the Liberty Stadium.
Vunipola said: “The last month or so has been a good period of learning for us and gave us a bigger perspective on what the whole picture was, it’s not all about winning.
“We try and focus on little things we can sort out each week, the more we can do that, the more that will translate into the game.
“That showed on Sunday when we regrouped really well after half-time with 13-men, when everyone came on we had a new energy to our play and that took us over the line.”
