Captain Clapp hails team spirit
Captain Lotte Clapp believes Saracens Women will bounce back stronger from the defeat to Harlequins Ladies, which ended their five-game winning run.
Saracens dropped down to second place in the Tyrrells Premier 15s league table after the 20-17 loss in front of more than 1,200 people at the Twickenham Stoop, but Clapp said it was a “wake-up call” which will only result in improvement.
“We’re only going to learn from it, and as a team it will make us stronger,” she said. “When you go through games and just keep winning, there’s only so much you can take into the next week’s training.
“There’s so much we can take from this, and it’s about mentality as well. How we grow as a team and get stronger.
“The way we all got into a huddle straight away as a team at the final whistle shows how strong we are. There were no heads down or bodies all over the floor, it was hands in as a team and we will do it as one.”
Saracens scored three tries and were ahead for most of the game, until Harlequins capitalised on a yellow card for Lauren Newman, scoring ten quick points while the visitors were down to 14 players.
“It was really frustrating,” Clapp continued. “At points I really thought we were going to get there. The momentum just kept swinging. They’re such a strong side with some really good ball carriers, and little things like us not getting low enough gave them momentum in their carries.
“It’s game management, and that’s something which will come over time. We managed to gain ball back from Quins which was great turnover, but then soon after we’d lose it again, just from silly mistakes. So little things like that and making sure we don’t have a high penalty count, we’ll look at and see how we can improve.”
