Casey: "I like the matches where it’s a bit of a struggle, because it shows your character"
Hannah ‘Choppa’ Casey returned to Saracens Women at the start of the 2018/2019 season and has been an integral part of the team’s run to the final of the Tyrrells Premier 15s Final.
The Ireland international’s hard running and strong defence has helped her form an effective centre partnership with Lauren Cattell.
However, returning to a club after time away can always be a daunting prospect but for Casey, the familiarity of her surroundings helped with that transition.
“It felt good to come back to Sarries. Obviously, there’s a bit of pressure but everyone knew me already so that helped. It was exciting to work with a new coaching team as well.
While Saracens Women are going into the final with just one defeat to their name this season, they’ve not had it all their own.
The defending champions have had to go to the well on a number of occasions against the likes of Quins, Bristol Bears Ladies, Gloucester-Hartpury Women and Loughborough Lightning. Either coming back late on to win or defending their line with a narrow lead.
“The win over Quins here at Allianz was a highlight. That win showed our passion and character. It’s those sorts of games that I enjoy rather than the more I suppose one-sided matches.
“I like the matches where it’s a bit of a struggle, because it shows your character.”
Casey scored the winning try in the comeback win over Harlequins Ladies in January and both matches between the two teams this season have been characterised by their physicality and the narrow winning margins.
“Their very physical and a force to play against. They’ve got a big pack and I think it’ll be another tight one on Saturday.
"They’ve also got some strong players in the backline but that’s exciting because what’s the point of winning if you’re not up against the best people?”
The Tyrrells Premier 15s Final at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton will kick-off at 17H45 on Saturday 27th April. Make sure you get your tickets and show your support for Saracens Women
