Cattell relishes new Premier 15s challenge

Saracens Women centre Lauren Cattell says her and her team mates cannot wait for the start of the new Tyrrells Premier 15s season at Firwood Waterloo Ladies this Saturday (14h30 KO).

With the final preseason training session now complete, Cattell believes the squad are in a good place and ready to hit the ground running.

We’ve had a really successful preseason here at Sarries. We are just coming off the back of some hard training weeks, making sure we are improving all aspects of our game, including the contact skills we know are going to be vital in a very competitive league this year.”

Across all facets of the club, Sarries pride themselves on their values and creating a positive environment and the women have also embraced this.

“As well as working hard on the pitch we have done lots of work off pitch. Ensuring we have the right culture has been a really big step for us. Having the whole team buy into certain values has made Sarries a great environment to be around” said Cattell.

“Last week we went to Stubbers Outdoor Adventure Centre as part of a team building weekend.  We took on a number of different activities and challenges which put many people out of their comfort zones, not normally a side you see of your team mates, so it was great to work together and achieve success with the team. We also spent time away together in France when we played Stade Rennais which was another great opportunity to gel as a group”.

“Talking with a number of the girls, we all agree that by spending time together as a squad away from rugby has made us more excited for the new campaign. It has given us a chance to lift everyone’s confidence, mix the new girls in with the rest of the team and get excited to play alongside each other.”

Following a season away from Sarries on the World Sevens Series Circuit with England, Cattell is looking forward to taking to the pitch with her 15s team mates.

“I'm really excited to get back in a Sarries shirt, after a challenging year away with sevens I feel I can bring a lot back from the environment” said Cattell.

“Not only do I feel at a better place physically myself, the time I had with sevens made me understand the importance of team unity and how it can impact all aspects of training and competing. We know that this year is going to throw a number of challenges at us but our attitude and willingness to keep learning as a group is really going to carry us though.”

And what does the centre expect from the upcoming season?

“The new Tyrrells Premier 15s league is going to be super competitive. With all teams having a number of new signings and an increased investment across the board, I think the standard of the competition will reach new heights,” said Cattell.

“Firwood Waterloo themselves are new into the top flight this year and we don’t know what to expect from them. This has lead us to focus on our own performance going into these first few games with an aim of producing a style of rugby that will challenge any team we play against. I'm super excited to get the season underway and see how teams are matching up.”

Saracens Women face Firwood Waterloo Ladies in Round 1 of the Tyrrells Premier 15s on Saturday 16th September at The Memorial Ground, 14h30 kick off.
