Clapp appointed Saracens Women captain
Saracens Women are pleased to announce that Lotte Clapp has been appointed as Saracens Women captain for the 2017/18 season.
Commenting on the announcement, Clapp said: “It’s a huge honour and privilege to have been chosen to captain and represent Saracens. I have been part of the club for four years now and have seen the team go from strength to strength so I’m really excited for the new season ahead.”
“Coming off the back of the success in the recent World Cup, the women's game is growing and it's an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Tyrell's Premier 15s competition. The new platform is enabling players to be challenged on a weekly basis by teams across the country and I think it’s going to be the most competitive season yet which will only help to continue the growth of the game.”
Clapp joined Saracens Women in 2013, making her Premiership debut in October 2014 and has made 31 appearances since. The 22 year old has 10 Test caps for England XV and had the opportunity of playing professionally with England 7s last season.
Clapp succeeds Sonia Green who joined Saracens in 2002 and was appointed as club captain in 2014. During her time at the club, Green has won multiple Premiership & National Cup titles, gained international honours with England 7s and lead her Sarries side to a Premiership final in 2016.
"Stepping down has been an incredibly hard decision to do but it is the right decision for me and most importantly the team" said Green.
"I am confident Lotte is the right person to lead the team into this new and exciting era for rugby and I know she will do an excellent job. Passing over the captaincy to Lotte has made the decision much easier to do and I am excited to have the opportunity to play alongside her this season."
"I feel truly honoured to have captained Saracens. I have learnt more this season captaining a side that has had to work for every point, than I have done over my 16 years at Saracens and I hope I can use this experience to support the team this year in the new Premier 15s competition."
Saracens Women Head Coach, Rob Cain praised the outgoing captain: “I want to thank Sonia for her tireless work on and off the field as captain over the past two seasons. It's been a pleasure working so closely with her and she has been instrumental in setting the tone and culture for our younger players at the club.
“She led the team unselfishly, always putting the group first and was central to our good performances in must win games. Sonia set the standards on and off the pitch and will continue to have a supporting role as a senior player to the group and we are lucky that she is on hand to help Lotte settle in to her new role as captain.”
Confirming the appointment, Cain said: “I was delighted when Lotte accepted the captaincy. She’s come all the way through the ranks at Sarries to the heights of being a dual 15s and 7s international and all that experience has helped her become a natural leader alongside having some fantastic captains to play under before her with Maggie and Sonia.”
“Her leadership qualities and decision making have shone throughout our preseason and recent trip to France and I know that she will represent the players, the team and the club through her positive actions and words.”
