Comeback delights McCall

Petrus Du Plessis was superb, and I’m not sure how he wasn’t Man of the Match, as to scrummage that way against Marcos Ayerza takes some doing. I thought he was brilliant today." - See more at:

Mark McCall hailed his side’s comeback against Bath as one of the season’s most satisfying wins, as Saracens scored 19 unanswered second half points to defeat Bath 19-13.

After Bath ran into a 13-point lead, Saracens inspired by Maro Itoje and captain Brad Barritt showed champions spirit as they overturned their first half deficit to win their ninth Premiership game of the season.

Speaking after the thrilling win, McCall said: “It feels really good, as this is one of the most satisfying wins of this season. We didn’t have our most experienced team out today and to be 13-0 down you can fold in those situations but I thought we scrapped and we fought for everything in that second half. That second half performance was a great performance because it took us a while to get to 13-13. Once we got in front I thought we were magnificent, almost perfect rugby.”

Saracens were staring down the barrel of defeat going into the first half, but a Schalk Brits try and fourteen point haul from outside half Charlie Hodgson edged a tight contest.

“I don’t think it was a 13-0 first half because we were into that strong wind Chris Wyles pass to Duncan was kind of marginal,” said McCall. “We were very composed at half time. Brad Barritt led the team magnificently today. We didn’t think we played too badly we just needed to do what we do. We needed to pressurise them, we needed to use the wind, we needed to improve our set piece which had been poor in the first half and we did all of those things. But then we just spent most of our time in their 22 and took a while to get over their line, when we did we were very good.”
