Conlon stars in first Premiership start
Mark McCall described back row bolter Joel Conlon as Saracens shining light after the 22-year old produced a Man of the Match performance in his first Aviva Premiership start in Saracens’ 29-18 win over Sale Sharks.
Conlon, who came into the side to replace Schalk Burger, didn’t put a foot wrong in an accomplished 80-minute display alongside the ever-impressive Jackson Wray and old warrior Kelly Brown in the Sarries back row. Since arriving at the Saracens academy in 2015 Conlon has endured a frustrating spell on the side-lines with a number of injuries in his time with the club.
“For young players, all you ask of them is when they take their chance is to take it,” said McCall, “Joel did that today in spades. He was our leading light out there for us.”
On his Man of the Match display, Conlon said: “It’s a great feeling. Having Jim (Hamilton) and Kelly (Brown) next to me in the changing rooms and playing alongside some really experienced players is a real privilege. It’s a buzzing atmosphere when you pull on the Saracens shirt and we’re happy with the result.
“The lads have really pulled together this week after some poor results in recent weeks. Sale have been going really well but that was good performance from us. Maybe we’ve slipped off it in recent weeks, but we set pretty high standards for ourselves in-house. Everyone has stuck together and it’s great to be back to winning ways. We’re chuffed.”
