Delighted McCall pays tribute to players
A delighted Mark McCall hailed his players after Saracens recorded a historic win over Toulon in round one of the Champions Cup.
The Sarries director of rugby lavished praise on his team for a performance that ‘had everything', as the Champions Cup holders produced a display that will go down as one the finest in McCall's highly successful time at the club.
Speaking after his side scaled the Stade Mayol fortress, the first team ever to do so in the European Champions Cup, he said: “There is probably a reason why Toulon have been beaten at home in Europe (Heineken and Champions Cup) before. They have outstanding players and all of their really big players stepped up in the second half.
“Sometimes they made something out of nothing but for us it was a performance that had everything and in the first half we played some beautiful rugby – outstanding attacking play – and we showed terrific resilience in the second half when we twice went down to 14 men.”
He added: “We had enough composure and fight to get the job done and it is a hell of win. It feels good and I can’t say enough about the players.”
